Description of Program:

“The Neighborhood House, known as the ‘Nabe’ among its clients, began in 1898 as a one-room mission dedicated to easing the daily hardships of immigrant life among a growing number of Italian American families in Morristown. The building housing the mission burned down in 1901, and activities were moved to a more spacious, donated home. The larger accommodations allowed the mission to expand its work, and by 1908, then officially named the Neighborhood House, these activities included tutoring in English, providing help in finding affordable housing, and classes in music, carpentry, and crafts.” Speaker of the House, Rodney Frelinghuysen, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of The Neighborhood House.

Now, over one hundred three years later, Neighborhood House continues its focus on the family with an array of educational, recreational, and cultural programs dedicated to helping economically and socially vulnerable families lead independent and enriched lives in the greater Morristown community.

Programs offered include:

Day Care (3-5 yrs.): Provides a stimulating environment focused on identifying and addressing learning and behavioral concerns.
School Age (6-13 yrs.): Provides a supervised safe haven for children before and after school.
Educational Center (6-18 yrs.): Enhances learning and promotes good study habits (involves tutoring)
Sports & Recreation (7-18 yrs.): Promotes maturity, team work and enhances social skills through sports.
Cultural Enrichment (5 yrs. - adult): Enhances social skills and promotes self-confidence through accomplishments in music, dance, art and physical fitness.
Head Start: Neighborhood House has welcomed Head Start in a shared space arrangement that enabled Heat Start to relocate and continue serving the community.

Young Inventors Workshop: Teaches young people how to develop new products. (See separate description)
